Passing Strange is a wonderful movie directed by Spike Lee. The film is an adaptation of a Broadway musical. Music plays a very important role in the plot of the movie. The film revolves round the life of a young black musician named Stew. The best part of the film is that Stew himself plays his character in the movie. The other actors also have immense scope of acting as most of them have to play multiple characters. The director has taken special care in portraying the struggle some life of the musician.
The plot of the film is very interesting. The film begins at a time when we find young Stew rebelling against his mother, society and the prejudices of middle class black society in the early 1970s. The film Passing Strange delineates the life of Stew when he passes through different places and cultures learning different styles of music. The variety of musical styles shown in the movie is worth mentioning. If you are a music enthusiast you will love the jazz, blues, rock and punk included in the production.
When Stew reaches Amsterdam, he is amazed to find out the promiscuous culture of the city. He receives more shock when he reaches Berlin. Though he has a culture conflict with the metro cities but he learns a variety of music styles.
After traveling throughout Europe and learning a variety of musical styles, when Stew comes back home to meet his mother, he finds her dead. Stew was searching affection by the end of the film but his attempt went in vain. The director has been successful in portraying the life and events taking place in Stew’s life. The audiences will be impressed with the acting skills and the music of the film.
