Everybody in the world has a purpose in life, a general as well as individual one. Some are quite aware and able to define their individual purpose, while others are not. Based on this concept is the central theme of Zac Heath’s movie The River Within. Released in the year 2008, the cast of the movie includes Josh Odor, Craig Morris, Craig Luttrell, Jaclyn Friedlander, Thomas Moore, and Maurice Mejia.
Josh Odor as “Jason” is the main character of the movie. He is a man haunted by the question he often asks himself the reason why he is here. This question starts haunting him when his father asked the same question several years prior to his death. He is often haunted by the question and then makes up his mind to solve the question that regularly haunts his mind, come what may. In his pursuit to find the answer to the question that haunts him, Jason leads a highly motivated and disciplined life as a law school student, for the simple reason that he wants to avoid the terrible fate that his father had. With diligence and hard work, Jason is now a law graduate, and a law firm has offered him a job. To secure the job, he needs to attend a bar exam, after which he can join the firm.
It is then that Jason decides to visit his hometown, which is a small southern town for studying and preparing for the bar exam during the summer season.. As reaches his hometown, he reconnects with his two old friends: Lyla played by Jaclyn Friedlander and Paul enacted by Craig Luttrell.
As the old friends meet, there arises a conflict in the movie. An already Lyla finds that deep within, her heart she longs for her childhood crush Jason. Jason who is already struggling to solve the complexities of Lyla’s feelings as well as his studies, happens to meet a local pastor David played by Craig Morris. The pastor is in search of someone who would direct the youth group for sometime. David offers this to Jason as a part time summer job, which Jason accepts for extra cash and the compulsion from Lyla.
During his job in leading the youth group, Jason develops a close relationship with kids and gets to know their individual issues. As he encounters the individual problems of the kids, he discovers that deep within he owns a passion, he was never aware of. And at this point of time Jason realizes the answer to the life-long question “What am I doing here?”
At the very outlet The River Within is only about the concept of individual purpose, but deep within the plot explores serious issues encountered by the film’s characters. The movie also makes the audience to think about their individual purpose in life.
