Interesting and satisfying, “The Prestige” is a theatrical interpretation of a magical rivalry. The two apprentices, Angier and Borden are plants for Milton the Magician, with Cutter as his illusion engineer. During a performance, Angier’s wife drowns while performing the ‘escape from the Chinese water torture cell’. Angier suspects that Borden bound her wrist with a new knot, harder than what she could undo, resulting in her death. This begins their enemy.
The two men begin their careers separately as magicians-Borden becoming “The Professor” with his assistant Fallon and Angier performs as “The Great Danton” with Cutter and his assistant Olivia. Borden falls in love with Sarah; the two get married and have a daughter named Jess. Sarah feels uneasy at times with Borden and his fickleness, claiming she knows when he loves her and when he does not. As their career as magicians advance, the rival between the two takes wings.
After personally raising “Batman” from the dead and movies like “Memento”, “The Prestige” adds another golden star to Nolan’s resume. The script of the movie is based on Christopher Priest novel with the same name. Nolan, with this movie has done a remarkable job displaying his story-telling skills. Equal credit goes to the cast as well. Hugh Jackman has given an emotional performance and his acting as Angier is sure to surprise his fans. Christian Bale is equally impressive playing the role of Borden, whose decisions have not only ruled his life, but also the lives of those around him. Though the ladies, Rebecca Hall and Scarlette Johansson had minor roles to play, their role gave the movie the extra tinge of drama and suspense.
Speaking about the ladies, the movie at the ends reveals a part that the audience will never know until told by Borden. Angier’s assistant Olivia, falls in love with Borden when she is on track of stealing his notebook with secret formulas. Borden and Olivia’s relationship takes toil on Sarah, which drives her into becoming an alcoholic and eventually hanging herself to death.
The movie is tanked with drama and suspense, but the best part according to me in the ending. Borden is imprisoned with charges of Angier’s death. In the prison, Borden receives a letter written by Angier hoping he will rot in prison for his death. Nolan has worked well in fooling his audience into Borden and Angier’s death only to reveal none of the magicians died. It is all magic.
Giving away any more detail will spoil your entire experience of watching the movie. Go watch “The Prestige” and have fun finding your way out of the magical maze of mystery and suspense.
The movie is dominated by the rivalry between Angier and Borden. Both the magicians contribute their fair share of obsession, secrecy and sacrifice which fuel the battle leading in to a disastrous end. Angier’s obsession to over-power Borden causes him to loose his friendship with Cutter, while Borden’s secrecy leads his wife Sarah into committing suicide.
