Directly by Jim Jarmusch, The Limits of Control stars Issach De Banko, Bill Murray, Gael Garcia Bernal, and Tida Swinton. The movie portrays Isaach ambling throughout Spain on an uncertain criminal mission. He is “Lone Man” who discovers odd confederates during his mission.

The movie opens up with Isaach who is doing tai-chi, a ritual he is shown to perform throughout the movie. In the very first scene, we see Isaach in an airport men’s room stall. He visits a museum in Spain where he wants to study paintings. And he does that very keenly. Cinematographer Christopher Doyle has done a great job in portraying Isaach. The soundtrack of the film too is quite pleasing to the ears. The sounds relates to the noises of the street and the rhythms of the city of Spain.

The characters of the movie frequently come in and out from the narrative. They are amusingly disguised, which does nothing but puzzle the audience. Actor Isaac portrays unforced cool. Quite possibly, The Limits of Control is Jarmusch’s most sincere work.

An anti-psychological movie, The Limits of Control has the theme of sudden encounters, detours, and a time presented to the traveler. Jarmusch tends to set his hero Isaac in a semi-documentary landscape. The title Limits of Control has been derived from William S. Burroughs’ phrase and accredited with “Lone Man”. The audience sometimes presumes that the film explores the limits of Isaac’s own self-control. Jurmusch had portrayed Issach quite meticulously. He is shown sitting in an admonitory posture. He mixes short pithy instructive sayings with directives like he orders two express coffees in two different cups, rather than ordering double expresso coffees. He memorizes the coded messages that he receives through a match-box. After he has memorized the message he crushes the paper and swallows it. A revealing and gorgeous lady wearing high heels, a transparent raincoat, he meets in a club does not attract him. This gorgeous lady is no one but Paz de la Huerta.

I trust, that’s control, the director is trying to portray. But hold on, it is not just the Lone Man on who has limits but also others who want to control him. Along the way to Madrid he meets Tilda Swinton, John Hurt, and Gael Garcia Bernal. Tilda is shown wearing a blonde wig, John Hurt has a guitar case, Bernal is shown driving a truck.

The Limits of Control is a long and eventful journey where the audience comes across small moments that become large and simple pleasures that take a mindful turn. A poorly groomed movie, The Limits of Control has a provocative ending. Though a shabby movie, the film invites political action, quite paradoxically.

Though the movie has certain flaws, each scene is beautifully shot. The audiences are simply mesmerized by the portrayal of the planes. The duo of Jarmusch and Doyle gives to the audiences an inspiring movie. The music too is praise worthy.
