IMDB Review
Release: 11 June 2010
Hear the word ‘karate’ and your mind immediately pictures Jackie Chan, the guy we all grew up watching. If you’re a little older still, the name might even bring to mind the original film of the same name that was released in 1984 and also starred Chan.
This 2010 remake once again brings Jackie Chan into the movie along with Jaden Smith. The movie’s directed by Harald Zwart and has seen a major chunk of its filming done in the Chinese capital, Beijing.
Jaden Smith as Dre Parker is at the center of the movie as the kid that ends up China because his mother’s career demands it. Leaving behind the possibility of being the coolest kid in Detriot, Dre soon falls for the looks and charms of his Mei Ying, his classmate. She reciprocates but the fledgling friendship seems to be obstructed by insurmountable cultural differences.
Parker also seems to have rubbed the classroom bully, Cheng, the wrong way and is easily subdued in a Kung Fu bout by the latter. Friendless Dre finds a sympathetic ear and more in maintenance man Han (Jackie Chan). Turns out that Mr. Han is a master in the art of kung fu and begins to train Parker in it, emphasizing to him that Kung fu isn’t simply about punching and parrying the opponents moves but more importantly about staying calm and dealing with situations in a mature fashion.
The movie is produced by Jaden’s dad and Hollywood actor Will Smith. The movie will be out on 11 June, 2010.
