Waiting for a really exciting movie? Sometimes nothing else could be better choice than a sci-fi movie. The movie takes you to a future that quite resonates with the present times. There’s nothing quite different in the movie. Surrogates though entails a fascinating concept, the generic conspiracy plot is quite boring and fails to appease the audience.
The movie portrays a not-so-distant future, i.e. year 2017, where a revolution in technological advancement has made it possible for people to use mind-controlled robots who goes about their daily lives, while they sit in the quite comfort of their homes. Tom Greer (Bruce Wills), an FBI agent too enjoys the easy way of living through his surrogate. Bruce’s surrogate is quite ridiculous with lots of makeup and a blond wig. Peters (Radha Mitchell) another FBI agent is Bruce’s female interests. Like Bruce’s surrogate is equally unattractive but little less ridiculous that requires less make up to achieve the perfect look.
The world of surrogates is a perfect land of joy and happiness, where people are quite safe in t their homes, and far away from the miseries of the world. It is then that a violent crime takes place, the type of which was quite unheard of. Jarod Center, a college student and son of Canter (James Cromwell), the inventor of surrogates is mysteriously murdered. Freer and Peters take on the mission to investigate the murder, which takes them to the anti-surrogates. It is at this point in this story that a giant conspiracy unravels.
In the meantime, Bruce finds his surrogate broken and after a long time Bruce walks around the world himself. To the audience it’s a sort for relief to the eyes when they do not see the awfully decked up surrogate of Bruce. When the plot starts showing actual humans behind the surrogates, it is quite confusing for the viewers. For example, we see Rosamund Pike playing Bruce’s wife surrogate as well as the real version. People go in a random manner in and out of other surrogates, making it difficult to understand who’s who.
There’s a lack of stakes when it comes putting the main characters of the movie in dangerous situations. Director Jonathan_Mostow and the screenwriters have a done great job in intermixing human being s among the surrogates, but still the robots could have shown doing something more than just grinning and walking. The movies shows only one weapon that’s capable of killing humans, but sadly the weapon is quite missing and isn’t showed for much part of the movie.
The unnecessary conspiracy in the sub-plot and action sequences that’s simply maniacal. The sub-plot then takes much of the attention of the audience (uselessly) who are not able to explore the creation of the wonderful world showcased in the movie.
Surrogates portray some of the really interesting ideas. The excellent performance of the some of the surrogates to the humans being decadent behind the machines successfully entertains the audience. Surrogates is quite interesting for what it is, though a subtler version of the movies would have been a masterpiece creation.
