Overlaid with Charley Pride’s jaunty sounds singing the song ‘Sunshiny Day’, opening scene of Samson and Delilah of Warwick Thornton’s direction is filled up with lambent beauty. As fifteen years of Samson wakes up, morning light strikes up his bed like bestowing the benediction.
He then sits up having a purpose; he simply fractures the figure by picking a can from floor and holding it to the nose to take deep and long breath. He is a petrol sniffer and for few minutes you will be taken through hazy patterns of the day that is spent in a languid manner kicking dust all around tiny Aboriginal settlement where he resides in the desert.
In the place of endless plains, Samson and others in the community behave as if being trapped in bell jar and craved of oxygen essential to make the things take place. Only sixteen years aged Delilah and Nana her grand mom seem happy. Nana is the painter of the community and her work is simply spirited away to city by dubious personality who snaps each painting when finished. As her grandma paints out, Delilah sometimes watches and also helps, entranced both by purity of pigment and pleasure of her grandma in work that she does. Happiness of Nana is infective and as Samson studies silently these two from sidelines, he takes the decision that he is in love with Delilah.
The film is a demanding one. It replicates listless rhythm that governs the routines of the community. Thornton has shot the movie himself and has all the action open out in long takes that give ample of time for dwelling on desert vastness. However, there are too much of restless energy also. Samson’s brother has garage band that Samson is actually not allowed to join in for his fondness for grasping the guitar and giving a thrash to it tunelessly in full volume.
Samson doesn’t speak so much, for reasons that are revealed after wards in the movie. Delilah’s courtship is carried on in a humorous and gentle pantomime. He carries out his bedroll from the house of his brother and lays it all beside her. Then she tosses everything back to him. This keeps on going until and unless he wins her faith eventually.
There is a lot more to happen in this movie. Just watch it out to know more about it. Despite dusty realism of movie’s setting, the tongue-tied nature of the story gives it a deliberate feel of fable.
