Radio Days is a wonderful movie about the golden era of radios. Its title may seem philosophical but in reality it is a light movie to be easily grasped by the audience. Nowadays, only a handful people listen to the radio programs dedicatedly but Radio Days will enjoy its charm for all ages to come. Even the people, who have not yet enjoyed the glory of radio transmission, will find it relaxing.
This unique movie is a collage of small stories and episodes. Director Woody Allen has poured out his love for radio since his childhood through this mesmerizing film. The plot of Radio Days has mingled with the world of a working class family in NY of 1942. Various generations of the family is shown to have living in a Rockaway apartment always have a fascination for the radio. They keep it on round the clock. Several characters including brave heart Masked Avenger, socially prominent Roger and Irene, and the cigarette-loving girl Sally have played some major roles in Radio days.
Woody Allen has displayed his class in this captivating, humane, humorous yet dramatic movie to shower his tribute to the former stars of radio days. This film has no doubt elements of fun but character roles have enjoyed an upper hand here. Thus a pure heartening plot has evolved from the collage of kaleidoscopic emotions. Those persons who watch comedy movies without keeping sense and meaning in the list of expectations may find Radio Days as a movie of not much interest. But the majority of movie audience will find it closer to their hearts.
Allen has succeeded in weaving a poignant and refreshing story out of the numerous elements of comedy film. Here lie the deft skills of a great moviemaker. The humorous situations have never turned into cheap jokes but they composed a pleasing family tale.
Little Joe is the main character of Radio Days. Lone Ranger is the most adorable radio star of Joe. This movie has many dazzling moments. For example, when thieves break into a house, they answer the phone of that house and surprisingly win the jackpot on a contest. They fail to receive it but the homeowners receive it on the next day.
Spectacular dialogues have enriched the charm of Radio Days. Allen has not tried to compose some flowery idiom packed sentences. His composition has taken its elements from everyday married lives with their happy and sad moments. This unique quality has enhanced the sense of reality in Radio Days.
