In Precious: Based on the Novel ‘Push’ by Sapphire’ we see an illiterate Claireece “Precious” Jones played by Gabourey Sidibe. Jones has undergone treacherous debasements in life. Twice her own father has made her pregnant and her mother played by Mo’Nique, abuses her both mentally and physically. The family who stays in the NY City neighborhood of Harlem, spends their living on welfare. It is through her imagination that Jones tries to fight back the treacherous life she is undergoing. When she being raped, she imagines herself to be in a music video shoot where she is focal point and center of attraction.
It is her principal Mrs. Lichtenstein played by Nealla Gordon, that takes her to an alternative school where Jones thinks she would have a better and peaceful life. With her help, she gets accustomed to reading. To add woes to her life, Jones gives birth to a second child by her father. She raises her son as well as improves her academic skills. Later in the story Jones finds out that she has contracted AIDS. Thankfully her son is not HIV positive. She strives for the well-being of her son till the end.
The startling performances by Mo’Nique as well as Gabourey gains huge appreciation from the audiences. As Jones, Gabourey gives a crystalline presentation. The performances by both the ladies are equally powerful and astonishing. The screenplay by Damien Paul’s takes us into a world where people suffer merciless abasements in life and struggles for survival.

Carey has credibly done justice as a veteran social worker who comes into conflict having come across the plight that “Precious” Jones undergoes through. Daniel’s directorial masterpiece allows the audience to perceive the inner warmth and beauty of “Precious” Jones. As a schoolteacher, Patton depicts that goodness still exists.

Though Precious: Based on the Novel ‘Push’ by Sapphire’ appears to be gloomy, but it uplifts the audiences to the social issues that the weaker sections in the society undergoes. Incest (sexual intercourse between relatives, too closely to get married, like parent and child) and unlawful carnal knowledge is a serious subject people should be aware of and be knowledgeable enough to deal them.
