Directed by Jorge Blanco and written by Joe Stillman, Planet 51 is an animated sci-fi movie and the first feature film from Ilion Animation Studios based in Madrid, that was established by Pyro Studios. Slated for a November 20 release, Planet 51 is acquired by New Line Cinema for US distribution. Sony Pictures Worldwide via TriStar Pictures will release Planet 51. Starring casts that include Dwayne Johnson, Jessica Biel, Justin Long, Seann William Scott, Gary Oldman, and John Cleesse, Planet 51 depicts an astronaut who arrives on a distant planet and having reached there, he finds himself surrounded by aliens.

The movie starts with a NASA astronaut Captain Charles “Chuck” Baker who steps on Planet 51. The American astronaut feels glad to think that he is the first person to land on the planet. However, to his dismay and surprise he finds that the planet is actually inhabited by small green people who are quite happy to lead life in a world that depicts white picket fence. The world of the little green people is quire reminiscent of America during the 1950s. The only fear that the green people have is that the planet will be inhabited by “aliens” like Chunk (to the green people, anyone from another planet is an alien).

Chuck doesn’t want to become a permanent belonging of the Planet 51 Alien Invaders Space Museum. Hence, he navigates his way through the planet along with “Rover”, his robot companion and a friend from the planet Lem, voiced by Justin Long. Lem does not believe that the universe is just 500 miles wide until the time he becomes a reluctant protector of Chuck. But before Chuck could return to his home planet, Lem has to win the girl next door voiced by Jessica Biel. Hence begins the adventure, chase and pratfalls in the dazzling yet bewildering landscape of Planet 51.

Though the technical talent of the Ilion Studios crew presented some decent computer imagery, still Planet 51 is quite commonplace and lacks the Pixar perfection, especially when it comes to the writing. Jorge Blanco shifts from his Pyro video game career to the big screen but the adventure depicted in the movie is mo less than bland. The movie Planet 51 lacks in real cleverness. Most of the sequences in the movie is quite familiar and tired. Right from the buildings to the cars, nothing in the movie is unique and different; they are all tried and tested, except for the saucer-shaped cars that make you feel you are no longer in Kansas.

Despite the discredits that the movie has, Planet 51 isn’t a bad knockoff. The world of the little green people also has pop-music: “Lollipop”, “Unchained Melody”, “Mr. Sandman”, “Close Encounters of the Third Kind”, etc. The depiction of the Cold War era design is quite pleasing with towns laid out as crops, women neatly wearing beehives, and saucer-shaped cars. The movie will be successful in pleasing the children with the frantic chases and rain rocks.
