IMDB Review
Release: year 2009

The movie is fiercely political, deeply personal, unpredictable and whimsical in style. The writing and direction of Slava Tsukerman resonates across national, personal, cosmic and global level at. After seventeen years of exile is US, Sasha Greenburg the popular Jewish astrophycisist comes back to Moscow, his hometown in the year 1992. This is the year when Perestroika is sending the shock waves by social, cultural and Russian political life.

Perestroika meant greater freedom politically but it is the freedom without infrastructure of objective like that millions are waving for chance. Young desire for vivacity lacking in the cultural life. Elderly people should live on meager pensions, black-market booms, and vodka allocating has become the basis of widespread unhappiness in nation rife along with the alcoholics.

Sasha has come here for addressing the conference on structure of universe. The event brings him back together with Professor Gross the old mentor and with ex-lover and former colleague Natasha who suspects that Sasha might have fathered her daughter before leaving the nation in the 70s. The condition further compounds midlife crisis of Sasha: His wedding ceremony with Helen the US physicist has spaced out and he is in the middle of dead-end issue with Jill, another American who is the filmmaker associating him so that she can collect newly declassified recording on population crisis of the country for her environmental documentary.

This film Perestroika is very well shaped by series of observations, encounters, contemplations and memories surrounding Sasha’s visit to the homeland. His tour covers many decades which is worth remembering, stretching from era of Iron Curtain whilst anti-Semitism spotted the days of student life and he then defected to West, to the evolving dynamics with Helen, Jill and Natasha and collision of skepticism with sage obstinacy of Gross.

The plotline is mainly to do by means of reconciliation of Sasha with Natasha and relationship that he starts to build up with Elena, her daughter. Elena and Sasha might be decade’s part in the era. Both harbor the escape dreams—an escape from Perestroika’s false freedom to truer one where human nature’s corruption is defied finally and where the nation, individual, universe, world are all unified in mutual co-existence trance.

The main thing that surprises off bat about this movie is the character’s intelligence. They might be dysfunctional and doubtful, but they are all articulate and genuine on their grief. The screenplay of Tsukerman relies heavily on voiceover to put the themes crosswise. His dialogue is stilted to feel very natural. However, but it is still a great delight to be in the association of impassioned individuals.
