After the tragic loss of their unborn, the couple; Kate and John are left devastated. The loss of her child is sending Kate on trains of nightmares and haunting her with demons from her past. When at a local orphanage, both Kate and John are strangely drawn to a sweet, young girl called Esther. This seemingly angelic girl impresses every one with her painting, piano playing, but the normalcy of the peace at home soon begins to change. Alarming series of events begins unfolding, assuring Kate that there is something wrong with the girl they bought home. Concerned about the safety of her family, Kate warns John and the others, but they all go unheard until it is too late.

For long, I thought the movie was a lot like “The Good Child” but when Esther’s secrets begin being seen, it suddenly feels like a whole new original and unique movie, one of its kinds, which is a compulsory watch movie. If you are into strange and creepy entertainment, then this is a must watch movie for you. The movie is half decent and half goofy, midway between surprisingly compelling and predictable.

Setting up of the characters in Orphans is peculiarly interesting. Played by Isabelle Fuhrman, mysteries about Esther are sprinkled all over the movie. Every where she goes, she carries a worn out bible and always wears a ribbon around her neck. Her appearance reveals that there is something about this child that is far from normal, yet no one is able to tell what. The child actor Fuhrman’s performance is truly ground breaking. She has played the good and the bad and left chills at dark places. Playing the role of Kate, the devil child’s mother is Vera Farmiga. We are all aware that Farmiga’s performance is just too-good for horror films, but in Orphan, the actress brings vulnerability that elevates the film every five minutes. Then there is Peter Sarsgaard playing the role of John, the husband who refuses to take Kate’s growing worries about their daughter seriously. The chemistry between the pair is truly beautiful.

Director Collet-Serra, after previously having worked on movies like The Dark Castle and House of Wax, returns to the horror genre, only with more sophisticated story-telling this time. Orphan creates a dark, evil mask over it that leaves the previous movies one step behind. The winter landscapes, snowy, wooded areas surrounding the house reflect the theme of isolation that the director wants to portray. Of course, white snow always acts a good canvas for some bloodshed.

Overall the movie, Orphan is a good watch. With pretty dark and twisted tale that we generally miss out on watching these days, Orphan is a treat for the horror and thrill lovers.
