A washed up singer is given a couple days to compose a chart-topping hit for an aspiring teen sensation. Though he’s never written a decent lyric in his life, he sparks with an offbeat younger woman with a flair for words.
The former pop star of the 80’s, Alex Fletcher (Hugh Grant) is a washed up musician now, playing at fairs and amusement parks. Alex might have been a rage in the 1980’s but now he finds himself lucky playing at the local country fair. Just when his career seems to be dying down, the sensational pop dive Cora Corman gives him a call sending in an opportunity to write and record a duet to be sung with her. This life time opportunity is sure to take Alex’s career sky high only that Alex has never written any lyrics. If Alex wants to make a comeback, he has to craft a radio-friendly hit and in a short time. As luck has in, he meets a professional lyrist, Sophie (Drew Barrymore). Sophie however, reeling from a recent break-up with her ex-boyfriend, now a famous novelist, Sloan Cates (Campbell Scott), isn’t sure if she wants to get into this collaboration.
After a lot of convincing from Alex, they get into this commitment and soon find themselves sharing more than just their lyrics. Their little chemistry goes a long way healing the past wounds with its beautiful music.
Directed by Marc Lawrence, staring Hugh Grant and Drew Barrymore along with Haley Bennett and Campbell Scott, Music and lyrics is a romantic comedy which the viewers would love to watch time and again. The sound track is yet another fantastic take.
