Starring the charismatic Queen Latifa as Georgia Byrd, Last Holiday is a spectacular movie, which deals with human emotions in a delicate fashion. Though the film doesn’t have a unique plot or something extraordinary about it but it has touched the heart of viewers for its wonderful portrayal of life and death. Directed by Wayne Wang, Last Holiday is film to be remembered for a long time.
When Georgia Byrd comes to know about hear deadly disease, she is shocked. The doctors prescribe her a very costly operation, which would cost her about $ 3,40,000/. Georgia doesn’t have so much money to spend on her treatment. Knowing the fact that she is going to die within a few days, Georgia takes a new approach to life.
From a dull spinster, she metamorphoses into a charming and vivacious lady who lives life up to the brim. Georgia spends all her savings enjoying the best pleasures of life. She decides to spend the last few weeks of her life at a lavish European resort doing all kinds of crazy things. People around her get so influenced by her splendid lifestyle that they start having misconceptions about her nature.
Georgia enjoys every moment of her life. Her makeover in the movie is remarkable. From a simple Jane to a ravishing woman, that’s how she wins the heart of the audiences. The film is very straightforward in its approach. The director doesn’t take much time on mulling over Georgia’s disease. He delves directly into her life after the disclosure of her disease.
Her relationship with Sean her, colleague is very intriguing. Georgia liked him for a long time but never had the opportunity to convey her feelings. When Sean comes to know about Georgia and her disease, he feels attracted towards her as well. The film moves on very well in the first half. The beginning of second half is also quite enjoyable till the film shifts its focus from Georgia’s life to the serious social matters.
The audiences wanted to see more of Georgia’s life and her crazy adventures rather than the dirty power play and politics of daily life. However, the film is saved by the splendid performance of Queen Latifa. Her lover played by LL Cool J is a very sensitive and likeable character. If you move aside the social commentary part, Last Holiday is an amazing film.
You can watch it with your kids, friends and family. The film is like a whiff of fresh air in this automated entertainment world.
