Most of the sports movies usually have one-word titles. Invictus is not an exception. It is too a sports movie with one-word title and you would really love watching it out. Invictus of Clint Eastwood however, isn’t ordinary sports movie. It has an exciting climax when it comes to World Cup match of Rugby between New Zealand and South Africa.
Invictus takes place at intersection of politics and sports. The hero of the movie is Nelson Mandela, who in consequence of apartheid, has been elected as the president of South Africa after serving in jail for about twenty-seven years.
At the time of his imprisonment, Mandela studied out his Afrikaner foes and was quite wise to role sports played in national psyche. The rugby team of South Africa, the Springbok, was dearly loved by the whites and was treated with contempt by black population. To the blacks, this team has actually become the oppression symbol.
Mandela then taking political risk simply refuses to accede to the supporters demand that the rugby team be renamed and dismantled. This, if be done, would only store racial paranoia and fear in Afrikaner population. Recruiting the captain of the team to his own side, Mandela simply asks him to turn out its losing ways all around. His only goal is to make use of rugby for bridging the racial division that exists in the country.
Invinctus isn’t a biopic. This movie also doesn’t introduce the audiences deep inside the characters. Clint Eastwood sees Mandela from respectful middle distance. It is all about the strategic inspiration. You will come across a great politician at top of the game. Mandela is soft spoken and is the master of the charm.
Functional screenplay of Anthony Peckham is based on ‘Playing the Enemy’ the book by John Carlin. The most surprising part of Invictus is that it originally went down in this manner.
Invictus is a movie based on true story of Nelson Mandela—how he joined the forces with Francois Pienaar, the rugby team captain of South African, to help unite the country. Mandela has been elected as the President and he very well knows that the nation remains economically and racially divided in wake of the apartheid. He believes that he can quite well bring the people of his country together with the help of universal language of the sport. Mandela rallies the rugby team of South Africa as they make the unlikely run to World Cup match.
