Both in real and reel life, dread has a powerful position. When movies deal with dreadful plots then they become highly entertaining. Excellent direction and high quality cinematography manage to create a lasting impression in the mind of the viewers. ‘Dread’ is one such film that has managed to deliver the punches of a good quality film with effective character portrayals.
Dread is a movie within a movie. It owes its origin to the story of famous horror storywriter Clive Barker. It pursues a thesis film of some students of the same name. However, these scholars can be hardly termed as impartial. However, this film is different from the original story in various aspects. For example, the characters and the complex relationships between them have gained more significance than the central theme. The powerful character portrayals have made ‘Dread’ a quite engaging film.
The theme of Dread deals with movie scholar Stephen Grace. Philosophy student Quaid is another major character of this movie. Fear and the reasons behind fascinate eccentric Quaid. They along with Cheryl become involved in a thesis about this particular human emotion. The plot then moves through several attractive sequences. Several interviews take place.
Dread has a unique concept in the plot. The project of the students reveals some hidden truths of human emotions. They find out several unique reasons behind ‘fear’. When they look toward themselves they reveal many startling facts. In this regard Abby (played by Laura Donnelly) has ensured some charm in the plot. She is a participant of the project. Since birth she has marks on her body. She describes this birth mark has created a sense of shame and fear about her acceptance in the society. Her social insecurity is a unique point of the story.
The mutual relationship between Stephen and Quaid is a dominant characteristic of ‘Dread’. Quaid is an interesting character in this movie. He turns out to be the main negative character of ‘Dread’. This film is remarkable for powerful cinematography apart from unique concept. Cameraman Sam McCurdy’s work has made the scenes highly effective and gripping. His deft focus on several artistic elements like Quaid’s nude paintings has enhanced aestheticism of ‘Dread’.
Acting has also taken ‘Dread’ to a new height. Shaun Evans has effectively portrayed the villainous character of Quaid. Jackson Rathbone in the role of Stephen has presented a completely opposite character of Quaid. To sum up Dread has succeeded in ensuring fear in unique ways. Director and writer DiBlasi has shown his class in this film.
