Charlie & Boots is the latest offering by famous filmmaker Dean Murphy. After “ Strange Bedfellows” which had the concept of “mismatched Buddy”, Murphy depicted the story of an estranged father-son relationship in his latest venture. Two famous Australian actors who are well known for their comedy roles feature in this movie. The plot of the film is very simple and the audiences can very well predict the end after a few minutes of the film.
Starring Paul Hogan and Shane Jacobson in the leading roles, Charlie & Boots is one of the best Australian movies of the year. The film has comedy, play of emotions and the required amount of drama. The presentation is mild which makes the story very interesting. The film begins with Charlie McFarland losing his wife on their 45th anniversary. The old man gets very disturbed with the sudden setback of his life and alienates himself from the family.
Charlie started staying in his farmhouse and curdles into his own grief. His son Boots visit him one fine morning and is shocked to see that his father is in a very bad state. Charlie and Boots got estranged a few days back. But being a responsible son, Boots tried to pull him out of such a situation. Boots decide to take his father on a road trip to the northern tip of Australia for fishing. Cape York is their destination and the distance is very long.
Thus begins the exploration of the two lives. Both Charlie and Boots started delving back to their old days and tried rectifying their mistakes and establishing a fresh bond. The two stars give their best to make the film a remarkable one. The film has a typical Australian flavor. The audiences can very easily identify themselves with the situation of the movie. The film was like a holiday where you don’t have to drive. The Australian landscape is portrayed in a wonderful manner.
The audiences feel very nice at the end of the movie. When both the father and the son realizes their mistakes and began bonding with a fresh mind, the film picks up its pace. The viewers will never feel bored or monotonous due to the long driving session. The film may remind you of a usual Aussie road trip and its beauty. The subtle manner in which the father-son duo explores their relationship is worth praising. Direction is very commendable as the director uses least words to express a lot.
