You must watch out Barfly. It is a great movie and you will really enjoy watching it out. Henry Chinaski is a very talented writer of the prolific prose. He is unfortunately a skid row alcoholic with violent temper. He eventually picks up fights nightly with Frank Stallone as Eddie who is the bartender at local watering hole and simply lives in seedy residence, stealing food and gathering money enough for boozing.
Wanda Wilcos, the fellow alcoholic catches up the eye of Henry at bar in an afternoon. Although Wanda has the reputation of being unstable, the two simply embark on the dealings with each other and about the bottle. Their relationship is filled up with drama, irrational behavior and humor and is simply put to test when Tully, a privileged and rich editor, meets up Henry to publish the stories and save from himself.
Mickey Rourke is back in 2009 as a Wrestler. He arrived in 1986 as Henry the drunk in gazump of Barbet Schroeder of the movie which was chosen for the Official Competition at Cannes. Mickey gives the iconic, outlandish and surprisingly sweet role as boozy fighter-writer who simply has no job, no prospects and no money. However, he isn’t the loser. He simply has much self worth and knows what he is exactly. Delivers Henry Chinaski who can undoubtedly write up prose just to attract 500 dollars advance for the short story from the magazine editor.
The semi autobiographical screenplay-cum-story of Charles Bukowski is rich fodder for Schroeder the filmmaker, who grasps all juice from it in sensitively directed movie with wonderful tone of triumph for Henry, framed by humor out of character and downhearted exploration of human condition.
Faye Dunaway has been nominated for her performance at Golden Globe. Henry and Wanda make an outstandingly boozy couple who live their life on roller coaster of lows and highs. Henry however not holding out his enmity towards barman Eddie is truly the gentle soul. It is the character’s irony and the understanding of the mindset which makes this a haunting movie that’s impossible to get out of the head.
This film is the only one from Yearn Globus/Menahem Golan cousins which reached dizzying heights of Cannes red carpet. Just watch out Barfly anyway. You may have a complete different opinion altogether. Barfly is a love it film and you must not miss it. The movie has an autobiographical look.
