Directed by Werner Herzog and starring Nicolas Cage, Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans is an upcoming whose filming began in July 2008 in Louisiana and South Mississippi. The film is slated for a November 20 release. Though not a remake, the film tends to draw elements from Abel Ferrara’s Bad Lieutenant that deals with a corrupt police detective. The movie by Werner too depicts a corrupt cop who not only is a drug addict but also takes sexual favors as bribes. Though a rogue detective, Nicolas is as dedicated to his job as to his addiction. He is a fearless cop who cares little about law. Very often he wields his badge as well as his gun just to get across his way. The movie also stars Val Kilmer and Eva Mendes.
In the post-Hurricane Katrina New Orleans, Nicolas Cage has been shown as highly addictive and fearless detective, who wanders about the beautiful ruins of New Orleans with authority. Nicolas Cage complicates his already tumultuous life by falling in love with a prostitute played by Eva Mendes. Overridden by desire, compulsion, and conscience both Nicholas and Mendes descend into their worlds. This results in a masterpiece of filmmaking with sad as well as humorous sequences.
The main character of Bad Lieutenant by Werner is Terrence McDonagh, a New Orleans police sergeant. At the very start of the movie, we see Terrence as a good cop who’s been awarded a gold medal and promoted to lieutenant for heroic deeds during the hurricane. However, he becomes prone to prescription pain medication after injuring his back in his acts of heroism. While struggling with this addiction to medication he gets involved with Big Fate, a drug dealer who is suspected of murdering a family of African immigrants. Werner’s films delves deep into a world of degradation in which the hero will not be hero at the end. Even if everything goes well with Terrence, in the end nothing will be right with him.
The Bad Lieutenant has many attractions to hold the interests of the audiences: Nicolas Cage’s landmark performance after half a decade, the best dialogues, and probably the best ending. It would not be wrong to say that Bad Lieutenant is over-the-top cop thriller with amazing performances. There are sequences in the movie that easily extends and go beyond weirdness and madness, especially in the scene when Nicholas emerges from behind the doors to trouble a grandmother. Though occasionally the movie may feel frivolous but at times it is really fascinating.
Werner’s films always abound in surprises. The pair of Werner and Nicholas is a perfect match who is destined to give entertaining movie to the audience. The stellar reviews easily prove this. Currently, Bad Lieutenant holds a rating of 95% ‘Fresh’ rating by Rotten Tomatoes. The rating is based on 19 reviews. Even the critics have cited positive reviews about the film.
