From the directors of Superbad, but not a Superbad or even closer to it. With the right punches and inspiring nostalgia of the older times, Adventureland is a sugary, yet intuitive coming-of-age comedy that will find appreciation from teens and adults alike.
Adventureland is a movie directed by Greg Mottola, the director of “Superbad”, a classic comedy in every aspect. The movie is set during the summer of 1987. The story revolves round James Brenann played by Jesse Eisenberg. He is a college grad and as he was actually preparing to go for a graduation trip to Europe the following fall, he found himself to be cash strapped. His parents informed him that, they couldn’t afford to pay for it, as they have to move from New York to Pittsburgh. Hence, even after realizing that the European trip is a distant dream, the upright guy took a job in the local amusement park and be a carnie at a very low rate of wage. There he meets Em, a fellow worker played by Kristin Stewart. Immediately he falls for her and thus the newfound friendship slowly nurtures to be the true love of his life.
Adventureland is a movie, which will really bring forth a feel of the movies from 80s. This makes it far more authentic than all the other movies of the present time. Though, it is a romantic comedy but it will never fit in with the romantic comedies of the contemporary era, as they are rather filled up with many fluffs and are absolutely stereotypical.
The lead roles played by Eisenberg and Stewart has depicted the nature and trait of the young couple wonderfully. The supporting roles played by Wiig, Ryan Reynolds and Hader also worth praise. One of the best performances is been given by Martin Starr as Joel, which has attributed the geeky character, an extra dimension.
Mottola has written the screenplay and it is one of the greatest strength of the movie. There are several funny moments in the movie but still you can’t consider ‘Adventureland’ to be a movie, which is overtly hilarious. One can’t call it an out-and-out romantic movie too, but it has ample moments within it, that describes both romantic and comic aspect of the movie. Above everything the style it is been presented proves its authenticity in bringing out the psyche of a young group from 80s. The dialogues, the well-developed trends of the different character and an interesting storyline make “Adventureland” unique in every aspect. Thus the movie turns out to be a decent flick about a boy getting ready to face the real world. Thus ‘Adventureland” takes us back the time and reminds that we had to grow up.
