A Christmas Tale is a great French family comedy. Catherine Deneuve and Mathieu Amalric has put up with some fine performances in the movie. The movie revolves around the family tensions during the get-together of Christmas.
The movie’s main characters are father and mother who are in crisis, the son and emotional and confused daughter. Others include many in-laws and additional sibling. Junon gave birth to 4 children with Abel, her husband. Three out of four kids have simply matured to young adults. One amongst four died when the child was just seven years of age. The condition only can be reversed through the bone marrow transplantation that has a prominent failure rate.
For trying out the transplantation, one compatible donor needs to be found. Neither Abel, nor Junon, nor Elizabeth the first kid was compatible as the donors. Thus the third child has been conceived in hopes of generating the donor. When Henri, the third one, was found not to be compatible for transplant, Joseph the seven-year aged boy died.
Family carries guilt and grief of the death with them during the Christmas gathering. However, raising the feelings to breaking point is a breakthrough that Junon has leukemia. She only can be saved with same bone marrow transplantation, which proved obtainable for Joseph. Tests all through the movie reveal 2 compatible donors, Henri and Paul.
The film’s main theme is indestructible nature of family unit. The members of family although seem to be anguished at each other they simply would die to get rid of any mess which the family unit actually survives and lives for yet another day. The son Henri gets tortured with self deprecation, likely brought by Jungian connection to the incompatibility as the marrow donor and the inability for saving the life of the younger brother.
With passage of time, his incapability to compact with this simply plunges him more into self-destruction and failure. More he attempts to succeed, more impossible does his objectives become. This is life’s basic spiral. Elizabeth, his older sis disowned him from the family against financial bailout of Henry. It appears that both sister and mother Elizabeth and Junon unconsciously refute love to the black sheep son and thrust him to destruction.
Just watch out this movie. You will really love it. It’s a perfect movie for the Christmas holidays. Enjoy your holiday watching such few great Christmas movies.
