8 Women (2002) is a lovely family movie. The specialty of the film is its 8 strong female characters who visit their family mansion to spend the holidays. Directed by the famous French director, Francois Ozon, 8 Women (2002) is a homage to the “women’s pictures” from studio era. The film is based on the 1939 classic “The Women, 8 Femmes” written by George Cukor.
Starring Catherine Deneuve, Emmanuelle Béart, Isabelle Huppert, Virginie Ledoyen, Fanny Ardant, Danielle Darrieux and ED Laurence Bawedin, 8 Women (2002) is an excellent family drama. When Gaby, a high society woman returned to spend Christmas with her family at her country house, she finds her husband dead. Her husband was brutally murdered by someone with a knife. The plot begins to take amazing twists and turns when Pierrette visits the country house.
When Pierette visits the country house, she finds seven women staying there. The film revolves round the story of these females who come out with their secrets slowly. The murder mystery of the man becomes the catalyst of the movie. It is because of the murder, the seven women reveals their real self. The seven women include, Gaby, Mamy, Augustine, Suzon, Catherine, Chanel and Louise.
The death of the owner of the house creates such a situation, which leads to a wonderful plot. All the ladies are excellent in their roles. Their facial expressions, gestures, postures and emotional outbursts will make you feel at ease. The crux of the story is to find out the murderer? The audiences keep on speculating about the entity of the murderer.
In the mean time, the sudden arrival of Pierette creates a hustle amidst the members of the house. The mysterious female psyche is revealed slowly. Every woman is found to have some secrets and resentments against the man who died. As they speak out their minds, the viewers get to have an idea about the family’s past.
Each woman is treated as a suspect including the mysterious Pierette. Everyone has a motive to kill. As the dark secrets of the family get unfolded, some characters are made to meet with their true hearts. Gaby’s character was well accepted by the audience. She did a splendid job with her role.
The suspense increases as the plot progresses. Will the real murderer be ever identified? Who among the eight females is the murderer? There is no violence, no police and no harassment of the usual murder site. It is only the strict vigilance of Pierette and the eventual submission of the women, which will lead us to the truth.
