“500 days of summer” is the charming debut of Marc Webb, a first time director. It is a romantic comedy, that will surly touch every mind and will fill it with a breezy insight. The plot of the movie revolves around Tom (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), a hip youngster working as a greetings card copywriter and Summer (Zooey Deschanel). Tom is an earnest believer of love and fantasy and Summer bearing just the opposite thought. Still they meet and they fall in love. The story can very well be considered as a boy meet girl story, but it is a fantastic love story too. The plot propels as their relationship continues through 500 days. The movie starts with the break-up between Tom and Summer leaving a Tom deeply devastated and coming under a trance of depression. He kept on thinking back to those 500 days of togetherness and tried to find out the reason for their separation.
The movie is filled up with several narrations bearing the essence of fairy tale spread at various unpredictable instances. The animated version of the title card clippings providing glimpses of the happenings to take place over the 500 days is also a wonderful idea exemplifying the movie in all aspect. The movie also bears some of the funniest moments projected over the silver screen. The clash between Tom and Summer’s ideology on romance attributes a topsy-turvy course to the relationship spread over 18 long months. Tom strongly believed that it is only destiny, which unites two people, on the other hand, Summer shuns from the age-old theory of love and romance. Thus their philosophies duel and the plot moves on.
Gordon-Levitt and Deschanel give their best ever performances, it has created a sense of resonance to the movie. All the dramatic sequences in the romantic comedy happen to be complete by means of the well-crafted quirky and witty smartness. Not a single moment in the movie will seem to be irksome in any way such is the presentation. The treasured moments of the movie include the triumphant exuberance of Tom after his first night with Summer. The dance sequence elaborating it by the notes of “You Make My Dreams” by Hall and Oates offers a sweet and cherishing respite. The passers by, a band and some animated characters from Disney joining in the dance sequence add up a perfect hilarious moment to the portrayal of the blooming relationship.
So, if you are tired of the mainstream slapstick comedies of recent times, then, it is guaranteed that “ 500 days of summer” will be the rejuvenating antidote, showering you with ebullience.
